How do I care for stone?

In order to help your stone to have a long life a sealant is required. Marcoa recommends the Miracle Sealants company for all your stone care needs. Miracle Sealants is a tile, stone, and masonary care products system. Miracle Sealants carries everything from sealants, cleaners, strippers, enhancers, polish, conditioner, and much more. Here we are only going to cover a few basic recommendations. If you are further interested in the miracle sealants products please visit their website at www.miraclesealants.com

511 Impregnator is a sealer for mainly anything that has a polished finish. It protects all medium to dense porous surfaces. 511 Impregnator is resistant to water and stains. It increases the static coefficiency of friction and will not alter the color of a stone.

511 Porous Plus is a sealer for porous stone. For instance it should be used on shellstone, travertine, coralstone, and light or white marbles. Please note that sealing a stone does not eliminate having to clean the stone.

Mira Clean #1 is a neutral based cleanser for ceramic tile, marble, or polished surfaces. This is a cleanser that is gentle enough to use every day.

How do I measure a room or wall for marble?

Measuring should be done by a professional installer. The installer will not only take measurements of the area but will also consider the “waste factor”. The “waste factor” is an additional percentage added to the actual measurement to cover cuts and placement. For example a floor install on a diagnose or diamond will have a larger percentage of waste than one installed square. Also larger pieces of marble installed in smaller areas will create a larger “waste factor”. For example, if you had a 15x20 room to install, that area equals 300sq. ft. (L x W), then a “waste factor” would be added, generally between 5-20ft depending on the type of installation. So in this example you would need between 315-360sq. ft. of marble. There are many factors that need to be taken into consideration when installing stone, so hiring a professional is the best way to go.

How is stone weight determined?

The weight of stone is based on the density of the stone, and this will tend to make the weight of stone vary. The guide below is a general guideline so that you can have an idea of stone weight:

Thickness                            in. per sq. ft.
1/4 (6mm) 4
3/8 (9mm)
1/2 (12mm)
5/8 (16mm)
3/4 (20mm or 2cm) 11
1 (25mm) 15
1 1/4 (30mm or 3cm) 19
1 1/2 (40mm or 4cm) 23
2 (50mm or 5cm) 30

Stone Finishes:

Polished- high gloss finish
Honed- satin finish with little or no gloss
Rustic or Saw cut- flat sawn finish
Tumbled- aged finish caused by tumbling the stone with sand, pebbles, or steel bearings
Unfilled- stone in its raw form
Filled- this refers to the filling of natural voids in the stone; this process is mainly done with shellstones, limestones, and travertines. Marbles don’t usually have voids that need to be filled. The stone is usually filled with cement, epoxies, or similar materials.

Helpful Hints

1. The finish of a stone has a lot to do with what kind of character a stone carries. When a stone has a lot of colorful character it is best give it a polish finish so that you can see the beauty that it holds. For example marble is a perfect stone to give a polished finish.

2. Petroleum or oil based adhesives should not be used when installing stone because it will cause staining.

3. Polished finish is not recommended for heavy traffic or outdoor areas. It will wear down quicker and requires more up keep. Heavy traffic areas refer to commercial spaces.
